Abstract

1444484 Dehydrogenation of alcohols RUHRCHEMIE AG 12 Sept 1974 [19 Sept 1973] 39867/74 Heading C2C Carbonyl compounds are prepared by dehydrogenation of aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohols using a copper catalyst at 200-450‹ C<SP>4</SP> in the presence of (i) water in an amount of from 2 to 27 volumes of liquid water per 100 volumes of liquid alcohol and (ii) an inert gas. The water may be dissolved in the feed alcohol or fed separately as liquid or vapour. Examples prepare acetone and methyl isobutyl ketone from isopropanol; methyl ethyl ketone from butanol-2; cyclohexanone from cyclohexanol; and aldehydes from a C 13 oxo alcohol from tetrapropylene.
