Abstract
131,673. Wade, H., (National Paper Can Co.). Julv 27, 1918. Seamed joints; seaming.-Lids, ends or bottoms with seamed joints are fixed to cans or cylindrical receptacles without the use of an interior mandrel. A flanged disk 3, Fig. 3, is placed in the end of the can 2, and the two are pressed into a groove in an anvil 5 by an expanding die 7. The can and disk are thus held against end movement whilst the edges are rolled over by a succession of dies 13, 14, Fig. 5. As shown in Fig. 6, the end 3a is cut out by a punch 15 and pressed into flanged form by a plunger 14. The end is pushed well into the can 2a so that the rolling-dies first roll up the edge of the can and then roll the can and the flange 4 together. The expanding die may be formed with teeth which score the inner surface of the flange 4 to enable it to be rolled more easily.
