Be it known that I, EnwIN HULnEnT, a citizen of the United States. residing at South Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Expanding Dies or Tools, of which the following is a full,` clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,

My invention relates to the securing of closures within the ends of cans or receptacles and is designed to )rovide an ex anding tool or die which will do away with the need for a supporting mandrel within the vreceptacle and will co-act with external dies to properly bead or shape the end portion of the receptacle for co-action with the closure. The tool is also adapted to be used forv securing the closure 1n place and `1s 111-' tended to act upon both the flange of the closure and the wall of the receptacle by' jointly beading them and (zo-acting with an end die and outside supporting anvils or die or tool which may be inserted Within 4o the end of the receptacle, and preferably within the flange of the closure while in place within the end of the receptacle; the tube acting to bead and shape the end portion of the receptacle, together with the cir- 4 5 cular flange of the closure.
In the drawings, referring to the form of Figs. l to S inclusive, 2 represents a'die segment, such as shown'in Figs. 6 and 7. The external surface of this section or segment forms the arc of a circle and preferably has the step formation shown, although this may be varied according to the requirements of the other dies.

As shown, the lowest portion of largest diameter 3 forms a projecting lip adapted to form a bead inthe closure and end por` tion of 'the receptacle when the parts are' expanded. The neck I is adapted to receive a portion of the seam when engaged by a'nother end moving die moving at right angles to the plane of the die or tool shown. Each segment is provided along its angular inner portions with cam recesses-5 which are engaged bythe depending side lips or projections() of the wedges 7. Each wedge has two of these depending lips, which lips engage each a camgroove of one of the are- The outer projecting .portion 8 of each wedge is shaped to correspond with the portions 3 'and 4 of the segments so that when the parts are in expanded position, as shown in Fig. l, a complete circular die is formed.
The -dies andl vwedges are assemblech as shown in Fig. 8, the side portions of the wedges preferably fitting against each other and as shown in Fig. 8 the segments are in their contracted positions. 'The parts in this position are inserted within the flange of a closure within the end of a' receptacle and an expanding device is then employed within the tool to expand the parts into concentric angle or die which contracts in forming the bead.
In Figs. 9 and 10, I show tools corresponding to those shown -i'n- Figs. 1 to 8, ex-
cept that the end portions 3 anclb are modified to give successive operations-in the forming of the complete seam closure between the cap and the body of the receptacle.
The device is preferably made in eight pieces, four segments and four wedges, as this gives sufficient expanding and contractf ing capacity, though a larger number may be used" if desired. The construction is strong and allows the. exertion of heavy pressures; the movements ofnthe segments are positive in both directions; by reason of the tongue and groove engagement of the wedges therewith, and .the tool does away with the need for inserting mandrels inside thereceptacle beyond the cap.
Heretofore, such `closures could only be seamed at one end of the receptacle on account of the necessary presence of the internal supporting mandrel, while my invenltion enables the support to be applied at both ends, as the die is not withinthe receptacle body and nO mandrel is needed. When expanded, a true circle is afforded, thus giving the desired action at all points around the closure and body while the die can easily be' contracted and withdrawn clear from the work being done.
The amount O movement may be increased ordec-reased by varying the angle oi' the dove-tails Or engaged cam grooves. between the Wedges and segments, and other variations mayl be-made without departing from my invention.
I claim: v '1. An expanding' tool or die comprising a,
pluralityof segments having external diey having external diel portions, the external .ries of segments with beading portionsarranged to bead the wall of the receptacle or closure, and wedges arranged to expand the segments and having edge portions similar to the segments and forming a continuation ,thereof when thel parts are expanded; substantially as described. An expanding tool or die, comprising a series of expanding segments eaeh having an arc-shaped outer -surfaeevvith angular inner portions, and a` series of Wedges co-acting therewith, said wedges having tongue and groove engagement with the inner 'inclined portions of the segments'and provided with outer portions shaped similar to the outer portions of the segments, the parts when expanded forming a completeeircle of similar contour throughout g' substantially .as described. y

An expanding tool or die, comprising at least four segments, each having an Outer shaping surface, combined with at least four expanding wedges movable along angular portions of the segments and engaged there- \vith.to positively move the saine, the Wedges having outer shaping surfaces corresponding to the outer shaping 4surfaces of thev segments;substantially as described.
