Abstract

1316457 Foamed coatings POLYMER CORP Ltd 23 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 45373/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A suported embossed latex foam layer is obtained by foaming a film forming aqueous latex compound, free of gelling agent, comprising (a) a latex of a curable rubbery polymer, (b) a curative system and (c) a foaming agent capable of producing a highly substantive latex foam, which will resist heating at temperatures suitable for drying the foam, without collapsing, removing at least a major proportion of the water from the foam layer by heating without causing diminution in the thickness of the foam layer and with no curing of the polymer and embossing the layer at a temperature sufficient to cure the curable polymer. Preferably at least 90% of the water is removed from the foam. Suitable polymers are natural rubber and homo- and co-polymers of conjugated alkadienes of 4-8 C atoms, e.g. butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene. Numerous suitable materials are listed. Specified foaming agents are amphoteric emulsifiers of formula R-N(R 1 )-R 2 -COOM, where R i is the group -R 2 -COOM, hydrogen, or a 1-5C alkyl group, R 2 is a straight chained or branched alkylene group of 1-5 C atoms and M is a cation which renders the emulsifier water soluble. Suitable materials are listed. Fillers, e.g. calcium carbonate, silica, clay, anhydrous aluminium silicate, barytes, talc and lithopone, may be present. Suitable curative systems contain a vulcanising agent, e.g. sulphur, an activator, e.g. zinc oxide, a primary accelerator, e.g. thiuram or dithiocarbamate and a secondary accelerator, e.g. thiazole. Support materials listed are carpets, fabrics, cotton mesh, nylon tricot, jute fabric and non-woven materials. Preferably the foam layer is applied to a thickness 1/16-1/2". The embossing may be carried out using heated rollers. In a modification of the process a solution of a watersoluble accelerator, e.g. a carbamate, may be sprayed onto the dried foam prior to embossing.
