Abstract

1316262 Raising liquids by gaseous pressure T H GOSSLING 3 July 1970 [4 July 1969J 33730/69 Heading F1R In apparatus for pumping fluids which comprises a vessel B containing as described a gas, connected by U-tubes D, E containing liquid, to vessels A1, A2 respectively, the gas within the vessel B is subjectable to a reduction and a subsequent increase in pressure relative to atmospheric pressure so that liquid is transferred from the vessel A1 via the vessel B to the vessel A2, the U-tube D acting as a valve during discharge of liquid from the vessel B to maintain the increased pressure therein. A number of vessels B, A may be arranged in a stepped sequence to form a multi stage pump, Fig.4 (not shown) or be arranged in the form of a column, Fig. 5 (not shown). The apparatus may e. g. be applied to generate electricity from the motion of the tides or be used to pump liquid requiring careful handling e. g. corrosive liquids or nitroglycerine.
