Abstract

1315958 Counting fibres IMPERIAL CHEMCAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Oct 1970 [14 Oct 1969] 50472/69 Heading DIF Apparatus for detecting and counting overlength fibres in a longitudinally oriented fibre assembly, e.g. sliver, roving or top, comprises means for gripping the assembly at a predetermined distance from its leading end and withdrawing gripped fibres from the assembly, means for straightening the gripped fibres and means for counting the straightened fibres at one or more predetermined distances from the gripping means. In operation, the fibre assembly is intermittently forwarded between aprons 1, 2 towards the gripping means 5. The gripping means 5, comprising fixed upper jaw 6 and movable lower jaw 7, is advanced towards the aprons 1, 2 by a pnuematic piston and cylinder or a linear motor 9. The jaws 6, 7 close to grip the fibres and the gripping means 5 is retracted to withdraw fibres from the assembly. The gripped fibres are sucked into a slit 14 between a pair of transparent, e.g. glass, plates 12, 13 by means of suction applied to a container 10 or duct 11. The gripped fibres are thus straightened and are counted by means of a scanning photoeleectric cell and associated light source placed on opposite sides of the plates 12, 13. The impulses of the photoelectric cell are transmitted to a digital cumulative counter 18. The gripped fibres are then released and conveyed to the container 10 via the duct 11. The process is repeated. A plurality of photoelectric devices can be used to count fibres of different lengths in the gripped sample. The collected fibres can be weighed to correlate the fibres of a predetermined length to the total weight of fibres withdrawn. A clearing device such as a knife may be operated when the fibres are released to ensure that all fibres are released from the jaws 6, 7 and also that any overlength fibres not withdrawn from between the aprons are severed. Alternatively or in addition, the photo-electric device can perform a scanning operation on release of the fibres, any impulse due to a remaining fibre or impurity activating an alarm or stopping the apparatus.
