Abstract

1315899 Stabilization of 1,1,1-trichloroethane SOLVAY & CIE 24 Aug 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 39627/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] 1,1,1-Trichloroethane is stabilized against decomposition by metals by the addition of 2- methylfuran and one or more co-stabilizers selected from aliphatic alcohols, cyclic ethers, diarylethers, nitriles, isothiocyanates and cycloalkadienes. The total amount of stabilizer is 1 to 5% by wt. based on the 1,1,1-trichloroethane. The alcohols may be saturated or unsaturated alcohols containing C 1 -C 7 atoms, which may be substituted or unsubstituted; preferred are t-butyl alcohol and t-amyl alcohol. The nitriles may be C 2 -C 7 aliphatic or aromatic nitriles which may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted; preferred is acetonitrile. The cyclic ethers may be mono- or polycyclic ethers optionally containing other heteroatoms besides oxygen and comprising one or more rings each having 5 or 6 C atoms and which may be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted; preferred are 1,4-dioxane and 1,3-dioxolane. Preferred compounds from the other groups are diphenyloxide, methylisothiocyanate and norbornadiene (bicyclo[2,2,1-]- hepta-diene). Other chlorinated hydrocarbons may be mixed with the 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Specification 1,045,056 is distinguished.
