Abstract

1315215 Electro-plating conductors RICHARD JOHNSON & NEPHEW Ltd 28 July 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 45486/70 Heading C7B An electric conductor is produced by cleaning an Al or Al alloy wire, rod or strip, e.g. degreasing with organic solvent followed by chemical cleaning with alkaline cleaning agents, then in an acid bath, each followed by washing; depositing by electro-plating or chemical displacement on the cleaned surface a layer of Zn or Cu-Sn alloy, e. g. by the zincate or Alstan process respectively; further depositing on this layer from an electroplating bath first a flash coating (5-20% of final thickness) then a final coating (80-95%) of ductile Cu or Ag from a cyanide bath containing Rochelle salt using a CD of 5-40 ASF (flash coating) or a copper sulphate or fluoborate bath using a CD of 15-400 ASF (final coating). Initially the wire rod or strip may be drawn through a die; the plated product may be rolled or drawn prior to coiling. The Cu or Ag coating has a cross-sectional area 5-25% of that of the final conductor. For subsequent batch annealing, Pb which does not form brittle alloys with Al, Cu or Ag may be electro-plated on to the Zn or Cu-Sn layer prior to electroplating the flash coating.
