Abstract

1314837 Tourniquets CLEBEL Inc 10 July 1970 [14 July 1969] 33536/70 Heading ASR A tourniquet comprises a ring 1 formed of a rigid annular outer support and an inner resilient wall in the form of an endless resilient membrane 5 having lateral edges secured to lateral edges of the support and defining therewith a toroidal chamber having a central opening, mechanical pressure-applying means in the chamber and operative to apply a substantially uniform pressure on said wall 5 to cause contraction thereof to reduce said opening, said pressure-applying means comprising a plurality of strings 11 in said chamber, central portions of strings 11 being distributed around the central opening and applied against wall 5, the opposite end portions of each string 11 being fixed to said support and to a ring 9 which is rotatable in said chamber by means of a pinion 39 to cause said central portions of the strings 11 to approach one another and tighten around the wall 5 to cause an iris-type closure of said central opening. The wall 5 is U-shaped in section and is secured to a rigid ring 3 by inner rings 17, 19 and outer rings 13, 15, the rings 13, 15, 17, 19 being secured to ring 3 by a key (37), Fig. 5 (not shown), and a string 47 engaging in a groove in ring 3. The rings 13, 15, 17, 19 form a groove in the ring 1 within which groove said ring 9 may be rotated. One end of each string 11 is connected to ring 9 and their other ends are alternately connected to the rings 17, 19. The tourniquet may be locked at a selected opening size by engagement of one end of a leaf spring with pinion 39, the other end of the spring being secured to ring 1. A button 59 may be pressed to disengage the spring from pinion 39. The tourniquet may be used on body limbs, on the male organ to assist erection, or near the pubis to act as a contraceptive by preventing outflow of sperm.
