Abstract
1314803 Shearing; consolidating scrap ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 10 Dec 1971 [15 Dec 1970] 57527/71 Headings B3H and B3W [Also in Division G6] Apparatus for shearing spent nuclear fuel bundles into pieces of predetermined length for further processing comprises a sealable magazine for receiving a fuel bundle 17 (shown in cross-section in Fig. 3), means for urging the bundle forward, a horizontal gag 27 and a vertical gag 30, or alternatively two parallel-acting horizontal gags (67, 68) operated in conjunction with a vertical restraint (70) (Figs. 8 and 10, not shown), for compressing the front portion of the fuel bundle 17, and a shear blade 25 adjacent to the gags, whereby the fuel bundle may be urged forward in increments, compressed and sheared. When the gags 27, 30 are operated, the vertical gag 30 which is sufficiently wide to overhang the horizontal gag 27 compresses the end of the fuel bundle 17 downwardly until it contacts the gag 27, whereupon it remains fixed and restrains the bundle as the gag 27 slides beneath it to further compress the end of the bundle against a shear anvil 53. The contact face of each of the gags 27, 30 slopes gently toward the bundle to be compressed, with the portion of the face which projects further toward the bundle being nearer to the shear blade, in order to reduce the risk of breakage of the fuel rods in the bundle which are frequently rather brittle as a result of neutron irradiation. The edges of the gags should be rounded. The shear blade 25 is attached to a shear block 57 actuated by a remotely-controlled hydraulic cylinder 26 which lies outside a concrete barrier 22. The alternative arrangement employing two horizontal gags (67, 68) referred to above is advantageous in shearing off the fuel bundle end fittings for when one gag holds an end fitting, the other gag is free to compress the fuel rods adjacent to the fitting.
