Abstract

1314504 Purifying IC engine exhaust gases BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR CORP Ltd 21 Dec 1971 [19 Jan 1971] 2459/71 Heading F1B An exhaust system for an I. C. engine includes a catalytic reactor and injector means whereby air or other oxygen rich gaseous fluid can be fed into at least two regions of the catalytic reactor. Exhaust gases enter a reactor 11 via a pipe 12 and pass successively through compartments 15--19 which are separated by foraminous walls and which contain particulate catalytic material, which may differ from compartment to compartment. An engine-driven air pump feeds a manifold 21 from which pipes 22 to 26 lead to respective compartments, each pipe containing a valve 22a to 26a, the valves being independently adjustable. The air-flow to the compartments is adjusted to optimize the reactions to produce minimum quantities of nitric oxide, ammonia, carbon monoxide and unburnt hydro-carbons.
