Abstract

1334989 Purifying exhaust FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 19 July 1972 33872/72 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2) In an internal combustion engine exhaust gas purifying system wherein a first catalytic converter 13 for reducing the oxides of nitrogen and a second catalytic converter 14 for oxidizing the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide content of the exhaust gases are connected in series between an exhaust manifold 12 and a by-pass valve 15, an air pump 21 supplying air to the second converter is driven from the engine through a clutch which is disengaged above a predetermined speed to prevent overheating of the second converter. The two converters are in parallel with a by-pass passage 16 extending between the manifold 12 and by-pass valve 15.
