Abstract
1314445 Fertilizer compacts DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 29 May 1970 [31 May 1969] 25980/70 Heading C1B A process for producing fertilizer compacts comprises converting oxamide or a fertilizer composition containing oxamide into compacts, at least one NH- group-containing compound which is able to form a polymeric condensate with formaldehyde and at least one formaldehyde.yielding substance being added as solids either before or during conversion into compacts. Conversion into compacts may be by tabletting, extrusion or by granulation on a plate or in a drum. Suitable NH- groupcontaining compounds are urea, alkyl-, phenyl-, acetyl-, cyclic- or polymeric-ureas, urethanes, thioureas, cyanamide, dicyanamide, guanidines, aminotriazines, polyalkylene amines and ammonium cyanate. The formaldehyde-yielding substance may be paraformaldehyde, hexamethylene tetramine or granuform. The oxamide may be mixed with Thomas meal, superphosphate, potassium sulphate or quick-acting nitrogen fertilizers such as potassium nitrate or calcium nitrate. The compacts which are formed in this process are uniformly penetrated by a solid skeleton structure of a urea-formaldehyde condensate which leads to high compressive strength and abrasion resistance. However, the skeleton structure forms such a fine layer that it readily disintegrates under the influence of the soil. The urea : formaldehyde ratio may range from 2 : 1 to 1 : 10. If highly hygroscopic constituents are present, e.g. calcium nitrate, high disperse silica or active carbon may be added before or during compacting, in order to improve the free-flow properties of the material.
