Abstract

1314175 Carbon bisulphide COURTAULDS Ltd 3 Sept 1970 [4 Sept 1969] 43883/69 Heading C1A In a continuous process for recovering CS 2 from a gaseous mixture of CS 2 , H 2 S and S, the mixture is contacted with a substantially water immiscible solvent (e.g. kerosene, for CS 2 , the CS 2 is removed from the solvent (e.g. by distillation) and all or part of the resultant sulphurcontaining solvent is contacted with an aqueous alkaline solution of a compound reactive with sulphur and having a pH of at least 9 whereby at least some of the sulphur reacts to form a water soluble product which is removed by water thereby, after separation of the solution, decreasing the sulphur content of the solvent which is recycled. The sulphur reactive compound may be an alkali metal hydroxide, sulphide, sulphite or mixture of these and may be used together with an alkali metal carbonate, silicate, borate or bicarbonate,
