Abstract
1314071 Fluid dampers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 12 May 1970 [14 May 1969] 22928/70 Heading F2S [Also in Division F1] An hydraulic device for positioning a load comprises an assembly of piston and cylinder units 1 having an output shaft 2 carrying the load and a damper device 3 operable, firstly, to damp the final movement of the load and, secondly, accurately to locate the load in the desired position. When the load is to be repositioned, the desired cylinders are pressurized through lines 17, the load being initially prevented from moving. During this initial operation the pistons of some cylinders extend while others contract and, additionally, a piston 5 in a cylinder 6 of the damper device 3 is moved from its central position in a direction opposite to the eventual direction of movement of the load. Thus when the load is released the damper piston 5 is forced by the load towards its central position, this movement being damped by liquid having to flow through orifices 15 from one side of the piston to the other. The piston 5 is then returned to its exact central position by pressurizing a cylinder 12 so that the rods 10 of pistons 11 bear on plates 8, 9 fixed to the piston-rod 7. A liquid pressure source 16 is provided for making up liquid wet from the cylinder 6. The exact central positioning of the piston 5 may be effected by urging the conical tip (26) of a piston (25) into engagement with a V-groove in the periphery of the piston 5.
