Abstract

1313855 Feeding webs MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 2 July 1970 [5 July 1969] 33985/69 Heading B8R In the unwinding section of the web handling apparatus described in Specifications 1,313,856 and 1,313,857, the reels 14 are supported by a structure 47 comprising a plurality of upright tubes 48 each carrying two cantilever arm assemblies 54, 55 mounted for pivotal movement in a horizontal plane so that the unwinding web from a non-uniformly wound reel can be aligned with the apparatus, e.g. a cutter, being supplied with the web; expanding-type shaftless heads 65, 66 (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) are slidably mounted on the arm assemblies by means of brackets 59, 60 which can be moved towards or away from each other by means of a mechanism including a lead screw (67) Fig. 5 (not shown), to allow for the accommodation of reels of different sizes. Each head 65, 66 includes brakes 73, 74 to control web tension. The free end of each arm assembly may be provided with a supporting roller 79 running on a horizontal track (not shown). The structure 47 is provided with rollers 50 running on horizontal tracks 46 so that the structure can be used to transport reels from a preparation section (11), Fig. 1 (not shown), to the unwinding section. Vertically movable platforms 80, 81 are provided to facilitate the removal of empty reel cores and partly unwound reels from the apparatus.
