Abstract
1313748 Injection moulding DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 17 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 46008/69 Heading B5A In a method of moulding a layer of material on to a core 17 located by retractable supporting pins 15 within a mould cavity 11 the material is introduced into the cavity from at least two opposed directions so as to exert balanced pressures on the core. The supporting pins are retracted when sufficient material to support the core has been introduced into the mould. The invention is applied to the injection moulding of golf balls. The material may be injected through a continuous opening 13 extending circumferentially around the cavity and connected by an annular channel 12 to an inlet sprue 19 by way of two runners 20 of equal length. Alternatively the material may be injected through a plurality of openings extending around the cavity. The pins 15 may be retractable by fluid pressure operated pistons 21, by rack and pinion mechanisms or by solenoids. These devices may be actuated by a pressure transducer, or a time switch, or a switch operated after a certain quantity of material has been introduced into the mould. The covered core may be finally shaped in a second mould. The moulding material may be a thermoplastic polyurethane, a polyamide, a polyester, an ionomer, gutta percha, transpolyisoprene or a thermoplastic block copolymer.
