Abstract
1313491 Making crank-shafts; welding by fusion PERKINS ENGINES Ltd 23 April 1970 [25 April 1969] 21147/69 Headings B3A B3R [Also in Division F2] A method of attaching balance weights to a crank-shaft comprises forming balance weights 10, 11, 12, providing the balance weights and web portions 7, 8, 9 with sets of complementary surfaces 14, 15, 16 and 17, 18, 19, the sets of the surfaces being arranged at stepped distances from, or at an inclination to, the crank-shaft axis, Fig. 6 (not shown), and electron-beam welding the sets of surfaces in succession. The crank-shaft body is forged and finished machined prior to attachment of the balance weights. The surfaces 17, 18, 19 and 14, 15, 16 are straight, but they may also be part-cylindrical, Fig. 8 (not shown). The inclined surfaces (17a)-(19a) and (14a)-(16a), Fig. 6, are also straight. After machining, the balance weight 12 is placed on the web 9 and a discharge head 20 of electronbeam welding apparatus is aligned with the interface of the surfaces 16, 19. The surfaces 18, 17, being successively stepped relative to the surface 19, do not interfere with the electron beam. The balance weights 11, 10 are next welded in position and the corresponding weights at the other end of the crank-shaft are then attached. Trimmer plates 24 are secured to the weights by a pair of set screws 29, which are passed through holes 10a and screwed into stepped inserts 26. The inserts are a close fit in recesses 32 and enter into holes 25 in the plate 10, where they are electron-beam welded in place. When a thick trimmer plate (34) is used, see Fig. 11 (not shown), a flange (40) on an insert (36) is located in a stepped hole (39) in the plate (34) and a set screw (29) is screwed into the insert to secure the plate (34) to the balance weight (10). Prior to fitting the trimmer plates, the crankshaft is balanced and the bearing surfaces hardened and subsequently cleaned and polished, if necessary.
