Abstract

1,118,350. Producing metal articles; welding by fusion. MIRRLEES NATIONAL Ltd. 29 Nov., 1966 [11 Dec., 1965], No. 47875/65. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F2] A prefabricated crankshaft is built-up from units consisting of crankwebs, main journals and crankpins joined at complementary engageable faces by electron beam welding, the welding beam being traversed to cover the area of the faces. As shown, the webs 10 are each formed with half main journal and crankpin portions 11 and 12 resp., whilst in Figs. 2 to 4 (not shown) the main journals and crankpins are separatively formed and welded to bosses or faces on the crankwebs. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the crankwebs are bored to receive the ends of the main journals and crankpins, the mating surfaces then being electron beam welded, whilst in Fig. 6 (not shown) an end flange and crankweb may be joined to a journal by the combination of bore and face welds, Figs. 7 to 10 (not shown) illustrate toothed or splined connections, between relative components, which are traversed by the electron beam and thus welded together. The process is carried out in a high vacuum chamber the beam and/or assembled parts being moved to provide the relative traversing of the faces to be welded.
