Abstract

1313456 Drying webs H STANG 3 Nov 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 51009/71 Heading F4G [Also in Division D1] Textile web 22 is shrunk or stretched whilst being dried by passing it repeatedly around drying cylinder 1 and guide roller 4, the diameter of at least part of said roller being variable. In the embodiment shown roller 4 comprises eight rods 5 maintained in position about axle 9 by pivoted struts 6, 7. Struts 6 are fixed to axle 9 via holder 8 but struts 7 are hinged to holder 9 which can slide on axle 9, and may be of greater length than struts 6. The left hand bearing 11 of roller 4 may be moved simultaneously with holder 10 so that the surface of roller 4 farthest from cylinder 1 remains parallel to the axis of said cylinder. These movements are controlled by a compensating roller (14, Fig. 1, not shown) in contact with web 22. Several drying cylinders may be used in sequence in a continuous process. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the guide roller is in two parts 23, 24 which project into each other. Roller 23 consists of rods 25 each of which consists of partial rods 26, 27 connected by hinge 28. The composite guide roller thus has a first part of constant diameter, a second part of decreasing diameter and a third part of smaller but constant diameter. The slope of the second part and the extent of the third part can be varied by movement of holders 32, 35 along axle 9.
