Abstract

1313292 Making welding rods MUREX WELDING PROCESSES Ltd 7 May 1970 [9 April 1969] 18153/69 Headings B3A and B3R A method of producing a welding consumable (e.g. electrode) comprises folding a metal strip 2 longitudinally into a U-shaped cross-section by rolls 4, feeding a free-running metallic powder from a hopper 6 into the fold, continuing the folding by rolls 8 to form a sheath, and welding the sheath with a resistance welder 10 with sufficient heat to at least partially sinter the powder. The sheath may be preheated by an induction heater before the welding step and the completed sheath may be compacted by either rolls or drawing dies. In a second embodiment two corrugated or grooved sheets 12 are juxtaposed so as to form longitudinal passages which are then filled with the powder. The sheets 12 are welded together and subjected, together with the powder, to a sintering process after which the sheets are slit longitudinally. Examples of tube and powder composition are (1) an iron tube filled with powder consisting of 50% chromium, 24% nickel, 4% molybdenium and the balance being iron, (2) a nickel tube filled with powder consisting of mainly copper but with small percentages of alumium and titanium.
