1313189 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 26 Oct 1971 [27 Oct 1970 13 April 1971] 50918/70 and 9177/71 Heading A3B An insole 26 is temporarily secured to the forepart of a last 2 by a locating member 12 having a C-shaped cutting edge 16 which partially surrounds a recess 20 in the member 12, the insole 26 being pressed against the last 2 so that the cutting edge 16 cuts into the insole 26 to form a slot defining a tab 28 in the insole 26. The cutting edge 16 is located around the toeward end of the member 12, the heel end of the member being provided with a lower blunt edge 18 which makes an indentation in the insole 26 to form a hinge 23 at the heelward end of the tab 28. The member 12 is also provided with a groove 19 below the cutting edge 16 which helps to grip the insole 26, and a shoulder 21 which prevents the tab 28 from entering too deeply into the recess 20. In use an insole is positioned on the last bottom and is then struck with a hammer so that the edge 16 cuts into the insole 26. The bevel face 30 on the edge 16 compresses the tab so that the insole is gripped by the member 12. After lasting the last 2 is slipped from the shoe and this causes the tab 28 to bend about the hinge 23 as shown in Fig. 4. The tab 28 is then returned to its original position when an insock is inserted in the shoe. The heel end of the insole is secured to the last 2 by a pair of pins 6 (Fig. 1) which have chisel shaped penetrating edges 8 and circumferential grooves 10 or by a hollow tubular member 32 (Fig. 5) having a pair of lingitudinally disposed cutting edges 36, 38 at either side of a recess 44.
