FUNITED STATES PATENT". OFFICE.
COMPOSITION TOP SOLE Benjamin Gilowitz, Bronx, N. Y., assignor of onefourth to. Albert Friedberg, Bronx, N. Y., and twelve and one-half per cent to Horatio D. Minter and twelve and one-half per cent to Robert J. Guilfoyle Application December 2, 1939, Serial No. 307.328 2 Claims. (01. 36-32) The invention relates to composition top soles of the general type usuallycemented to worn shoe soles. Y 1
One object of the invention is to provide a novel composition sole having a forwardly thickened tip to compensate for wear at the tip of a worn shoe sole.
Another object is to provide a composition sole having a channel near its edge which facilitates cutting edge portions from the sole to leave only thin, preferably beveled edgesthereon, for disposition in inwardly spaced relation with the edge of the worn shoe 'sole, giving a better appearance than if the top sole extended entirely to the edge of the old sole.
Yet another object is to make novel provision for securing the tip portion of the top sole to the old sole with unusual tenacity.
With the foregoing in view';'=the invention resides in the novel subject matterhereinafterdescribed and claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawdisposed at such a height as to leave. only very thin edges on the top sole after the edge portions I 6' are cut therefrom.- Preferably the channel sides I! are outwardly. inclined to leave beveled or feather edges upon the top sole, merging the latter well into the-edge portions of the old sole.
tool used in cuttingtheedge portion I6 from the sole I0.- It is preferable also that the edge portions I6 be outwardly beveled or feathered, .not only to economize in material, but to permit the entire sole I 0 to be applied to a shoe if desired, without cutting the edge portions I6 from themajor portion of said sole I0. Moreover, it is 'f-xdesirable to have the edge of the tip I3 and the longitudinal edges of the portions I6c0ntinuous Figure 1 is a bottom plan view showing one; form of construction.
Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views on lines 2-2 and 3-3 of Fig. 1. 1
Figure 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the top sole with the edge portions out off.
Figure 5 is a partial bottom plan showing a different construction.
Figure 6 is a dissembled perspective the form shown in Fig. 5.
Figure 7 is a diagram showing the un-cured blanks which may be used in manufacturing the top sole.
In Figs. 1 to 4, a composition sole Ill is shown suitably designed at II and I2 for anti-slipping purposes, said sole having a forwardly thickened tip I3 which is preferably of harder material than the rest of the sole, providing for greater durability where a large part of the wear is concentrated. The tip portion I3 is adapted to compensate for wear at the'tip of an old or worn. shoe sole, and while it is intended that the entire top sole be cemented to the 01d sole, it is Preferable to provide said tip portion with small openings or indentations I4 to facilitate driving of small nails or screws to additionally secure the tip to the shoe. 1 a
The lower side of the top sole I0 is provided near its longitudinal edges with shallow channels I5, letving longitudinal cage portions I6 to be cut off either before or after applying the sole to the shoe. The upper side I! of each channel I5 is the triangular tip portion I3 with the major portion of the top sole, the lower side of the latter is provided with rearwardly converging grooves I 2*, and a similar groove I2 is formed iii-the front portion of the tip portion I 3 A tip protecting and securingmember I9 is provided with a rearwardly projecting portion 20 received in the groove I2", and with rearwardly converging portions 2| received in the grooves I2 all of said portions having small openings 22 through which to drive attaching nails or screws to securely attach the top sole to the shoe. The member I9 is provided with an arcuate rim 23 which extends upwardly from the top sole EO to engage the edge of the old shoe sole at the tip of the latter, and the upper edge of said rim 23 may well be provided with inwardly projecting lugs 24 to lie upon the usual projecting sole edge or welt. Small openings 25 are preferably formed in the lugs 24 to receive minute attaching tacks or nails. The member, l9 may of course be formed from metal or any other desired material.
In Fig. 7, I have illustrated a blank of composition sole-forming material at 26, said blank beview of front end. I have also illustrated a substantially triangular blank 21 which may be formed of the the rear end of 21 being receivable in 26 The two pieces are then placed in amould and cured so that they become one unitary piece, providwitheach other, whether the portions I6 are to ing formed with a V-shaped notch 26 in its The outer sides l8 of the channels I5 are preferably vertical or abrupt to'guidethe knife or other very similar to the sole I0. At the juncture of same composition or other preferred composition,-
ing a top sole such as l0 or ill and a tip such as l3 or l3. The compositions from which 26 and 21 are formed, or the composition from which they both may be formed, are preferably such that the tip 21 will be harder and more wearresisting than the top sole, in the completed article, placing the wear-resisting part where the most wear comes and the flexibility where yielding is necessary. The relatively tough tip also permits use of one or more nails or screws in securing it to the old sole.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made for carrying out the objects of the invention. While preferred details have been illustrated, attention is invited to the possibility of making variations within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A composition top sole having a forwardly thickened tip to compensate for wear on the tip of a worn shoe sole, the greatest thickness of said forwardly thickened tip being at the front extremity of the top sole, the bottom of said top sole having channels spaced inwardly from-its longitudinal edges and extending from the rear end or shank of said top sole to said forwardly thickened tip, leaving longitudinal edge portions to be cut oil to space the major portion of the to sole inwardly from the edges or a worn shoe sole, the rear ends of the edge of said forwardly thickened tip being spaced outwardly from said channels to extend flush with the edge of a worn sole tip when said longitudinal .edge portions have been out off and said major portion is inwardly spaced from the longitudinal edges of the worn sole, the upper sides of said channels being inclined outwardly to leave beveled edges on the top sole when the aforesaid longitudinal edge portions are cut off, the outer walls of said channels being abrupt to guide the knife or other tool used in cutting ofi said edge portions.
2.v A composition top sole having a channel in its bottom spaced inwardly from its edges, leaving edge portions to be out 01! to space the top sole inwardly from the edge of the old shoe sole, the upper side of said channel being outwardly inclined throughout its width to leave beveled edges on the top sole when the aforesaid edge portions are cut ofi, the outer wall of said channel being abrupt and substantially perpendicular to the botton of the top sole to guide the knife or other tool used in cutting oil? said edge portions.
