Abstract

1313034 Smelting ores ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO 2 Aug 1971 [10 Aug 1970] 36159/71 Heading C7D Ore is smelted in a furnace, particularly a blast furnace using as an additional reducing agent a water in oil emulsion containing 3 to 20 vol % water and 97 to 80 vol % fuel oil, and possibly also 0À05 to 3% of an emulsifier free of alkali metal. Preferred is a fatty acid containing 10 to 24 atoms of C per molecule, or an alkaline earth metal salt thereof. The amount of such emulsion used is such as to provide more than 80 kg. of fuel oil per ton of metal produced. The emulsion is added by the blast which may have a velocity of 100-300 metres per second and a temperature of 1000‹C- 1400‹C. The invention may be applied in the smelting of iron ore or of ores of Cu, Pb, Sb, Sn, Co or Ni.
