Abstract

1312992 Programmed control BOWMAR/TIC Inc 14 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 34013/70 Heading G3N [Also in Divisions H2 H4 and H5] A micro-wave oven comprises a magnetron 30 for supplying micro-wave energy, a network 40 for controlling the operation of the magnetron according to a selected one of a number of modes of operation and program input apparatus 42 for selecting the desired sequence of operations of the magnetron. The network 40 comprises a timing network 52 consisting of a number of motor driven time switches and relay circuits 54, 56 connected to a switching network 18 controlling conventional heater elements 12, 14 and a micro-wave power control network 32 respectively. In one form the input apparatus comprises push buttons 45-49, each of which selects a different cooking cycle such as "thaw", "bake", "roast" "crisp" or "broil" during which the thermal and micro-wave heating is switched on according to the selected cycle and for a total cooking time set by a selector 50. Antennas 20, 22 radiate the microwave energy in the oven and cooling air is blown over the magnetron and into the oven from a source 60. Holes in the top of the oven allow passage for the cooling air. A thermostat 58 is connected to the network 40 and enables the oven to be initially heated by one of the heaters 12, 14 until a predetermined temperature is reached whereupon the network 40 then controls the periods of time in a selected cooking cycle for which the micro-wave and thermal heating is switched on. An alarm 59 signals the end of a cooking cycle. The input apparatus 42 may comprise magnetic, punched or embossed card readers and in a modification the micro-wave antennas also act as the thermal heating elements.
