Abstract
1312980 Insulating pipes INDUSTRIELE ONDERNEMING WAVIN NV 9 June 1970 [9 June 1969] 27931/70 Heading F2P A pipe 1 is surrounded over at least part of its length by a layer of thermally insulating material enclosed by a layer 10 of liquid and vapour impermeable material, the insulating layer being accommodated in sealed compartments by the layer 10 which at intervals extends radially inwardly to the pipe and includes an axially extending cylindrical portion sealed, directly or indirectly, to the pipe. Where the layer 10, of e.g. tubular foil, polyethylene, glass fibres and epoxy or polyester resin, surrounds the pipe 1, e.g. of metal, before the introduction of the insulating material, of, e.g., polyurethane reinforced by glass tissue, polyester tissue, polyethylene foil &c., polyester or epoxy resin, spacer rings 13 or helical springs 14 of differing diameter centralize the pipe 1 in the protective layer 10. Alternatively, the insulating material is applied to the rotating pipe 1 and the protective layer 10 is added in the form of tape or foil. The compartments are formed by applying a two-part electrically heated mould which locally contacts the protective layer 10 on to the pipe 1. More insulating material is added, and lining 24, e.g. of polyethylene, then covers the gap, and is sealed to the protective layer by sealing rings 5, as shown, or by welding, wherein the lining 24 and layers 10 are of thermoplastics materials. This form of insulating and sealing is used for the welded joints between pipes 1. Seals of self-curing butyl rubber can be used between the protective layer 10 and the pipe 1 at the compartment ends, or a sealing ring 8, of, e.g. glass fibres possibly reinforced by epoxy resin, bridges the gap between successive protective layers 10. Also sealing rings 7, e.g. of neoprene, self-curing butyl rubber, natural rubber &c., and/or rings 9, e.g. of tissue or non-woven material, lie between the ring 8 and the protective layers 10.
