Abstract
1312606 Producing aluminium by fusion electrolysis SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 19 April 1971 [17 Feb 1970] 23769/71 Heading C7B In the electrolytic production of Al from an alumina containing fluoride melt into which anodes fixed to a current-conducting beam dip, the interpolar distance is adjusted to equal a predetermined value by changing the height of the beam with the anodes fixed to it by a measured amount, measuring the resultant change in cell potential, and calculating the interpolar distance (d) before the beam movement from the values of the cell potential before the beam movement (U) and at infinitely small interpolar distance (Uo), the stroke of the beam (#d) and the corresponding change in potential (#U), from the equation d = (U-Uo). #d/#U, then the further movement of the beam necessary to attain the predetermined value, and making that further movement. Preferably the beam is first lowered by a definite amount, then raised by a definite but higher amount, the potential being measured each time. The interpolar distance is adjusted to and maintained at a constant predetermined value, with alumina being added to the melt when the cell potential rises due to the anode effect.
