Abstract

1312455 Tow-spreading; liquid treatment COURTAULDS Ltd 21 Aug 1970 [22 Aug 1969] 41893/69 Headings DIP D1L and D1R A process for spreading a continuous filament tow comprising forwarding the tow 10 in a twistless condition and under tension in a zig-zag path defined in part by a series of members 5 having stationary tow-contacting surfaces, shaped to contact the tow along an arc and located below the surface of a liquid treatment bath. In a preferred embodiment, the tow is passed successively through desulhpurisation and wash baths. In a preferred embodiment, a tank 1 is provided with internal partitions 4 arranged to form a flow of liquid from an inlet pipe 6 to an outlet 7. Between each adjacent pair of partitions 4 a further partition 2 is arranged which carries at its lower end a tow-spreading member 5. The tow is passed in a zig-zag fashion alternately around tow-forwarding rollers 9 and towspreading members 5. The tow and liquid pass counter-currently through the tank 1. The washed, spread tow may be deposited under reduced tension on a wire screen to form a wet-laid non-woven fabric which is preferably thereafter bonded as by print-bonding with an adhesive.
