Abstract

1312393 Magnesia NICHOLS ENG & RESEARCH CORP 28 June 1971 [2 July 1970] 30197/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] In the production of dead burnt magnesia (peridase) in a shaft kiln 10 the formation of "hang ups" due to initial carriage of fines through the kiln by the cooling/combustion air supplied at the base, is hindered by supplying said air intermittently. The interruption of the air supply may be for 1-5 sees. at intervals of 1-5 minutes. The interruption is obtained by a timer 80 operating air cylinder 76 through a solenoid 77 to divert the air to atmosphere, said timer also controlling the supply of gas to a manifold 56 supplying burners 54. The air is normally supplied by line 70 to a manifold 68 supplying ducts 66 in the lower part 28 of the kiln. Raw material is supplied via a vibratory feeder 53 and vibratory screen 51 to a hopper 44 feeding the kiln 10. The supply is controlled by a level indicator 46 incorporating a motordriven paddle 50 in a hopper 44. As the kiln and hopper 44 are filled, rotation of the paddle 50 is impeded cutting off the vibratory feeder 53 and screen 51 and vice versa. Treated material is discharged by a device incorporating a reciprocating bar 33 oscillated over a table 30 by hydraulic motors 36 through push-rods 38.
