Abstract

Lightweight concrete aggregate is produced from molten slag by leading the slag to an inclined trough, adding a foaming agent to the slag to obtain expanded, half-molten slag, forming the slag into numerous grains by dropping the slag on a rotating drum to spatter or by blowing with compressed air or steam and causing the grains to fall on an inclined surface and be formed into spheres as they roll down the surface. The inclined surface may be an inclined rotary cylinder. The foaming agent may be water, cement kiln dust, clay, shale, volcano ash, calcium carbonate or slaked lime,
