Abstract
1312288 Supporting conductors BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 13 Sept 1971 [29 Sept 1970] 46258/70 Heading B7L [Also in Division H2] Between two masts in an overhead catenary supply system one contact wire 6 is "run out" and another contact wire 5 is "run in" in such a way as to ensure continuity of supply over the span. The incoming wire 5 is lowered from termination 10; and over that part of the span where it is operative is supported by inverted "V" droppers 12 carried by rollers on wire 6. The wire 6 is similarly terminated at 11 and supported at 13. Each termination 10, 11 consists of two pulleys, one attached to the contact wire, e.g. 5, and the other to the catenary wire of the adjacent section, e.g. 9. The latter pulley also provides fixing means 17 for a weight tensioning device consisting of a tail wire 19, which passes around the two pulleys, thence to the mast at the opposite end of the span and weight 18. Thus the tensions in the catenary wire and the contact wire oppose each other, and the out of balance tension is taken by the tail wire. In this example, the catenary wire is tensioned at three times the tension in the tail wire, and the contact wire at twice this tension.
