Abstract
1312016 Varicer bougie CODMAN & SHURTLEFF Inc 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970] 23452/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] A varicer bougie 10 comprises a cable 11 formed from a monofilament of synthetic thermoplastic material whose molecules are axially oriented and which has a uniform cross section throughout its length, a tubular plastics cap ultrasonically welded over at least one end of the cable by bringing an ultrasonic welding horn into contact with the cap, the outermost end of the cap being smoothly rounded to permit free passage of the cable through a vein. Caps 12 and 13 are welded over either end of the cable and in use the cable is threaded through the vein and a bullet shaped tip 25 is attached to the forward cap 13 by passing the cable 11 through a transverse slot 28 in the tip 25 until it is within a central bore (26) and then pulling the cable until the cap 13 is within the bore 26 with its shoulder 17 abutting an internal shoulder 27 of the bore. A handle 18 with a central bore 20 having a shoulder 23 and a transverse slot 21 is attached to the cap 12 at the other end of the cable in a similar manner and is used for pulling the cable whereby the vein is stripped from the patient by the tip 25. The caps 12 and 13 are attached to the cable by placing them over the ends of the cable and encapsulating them between a support member and a vibration horn (33) Figure 6 (not shown) suitably contoured to receive the cap. A generator (30) conducts electrical energy through conductors (31) to a converter (32) which produces ultrasonic mechanical vibrations and transfers them to the horn (33). A clamp (37') prevents the cable from oscillating longitudinally during the welding operation. The melting points of the plastics material for the caps and the thermoplastic cable must be approximately the same. Nylon may be used in both cases. The vibrations are controlled so that only the outer surface of the cable is welded, in order that the orientation of the molecules of the cable is maintained.
