Abstract

1311889 Coating OWENS-ILLINOIS INC 11 March 1970 [11 March 1969 16 May 1969] 11562/70 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C1 and C3] Substrates such as plate glass, ceramics, glass-ceramics, metals, carbon, plastics and ceramic/metallic composites, are provided with a coating of a particulate inorganic material by; (1) applying to the substrate a coating composition comprising a particulate inorganic material dispersed in a low molecular weight low vapour pressure liquid polymer having a relatively constant viscosity and thixotropic character and which is capable of being decomposed or pyrolysed completely to gaseous products without leaving a carbonaceous residue, the inorganic material having a fusing temperature higher than that at which the polymer is completely hydrolysed; (2) heating the thus coated substrate to completely pyrolyse the polymer and then (a) heating further to fuse the inorganic material to the substrate. The inorganic materials specified are silica, alumina, boric oxide, decorative glazers which are glassy compositions containing low melting compositions of fluxes such as alkali metal oxides, boric oxide and lead oxide; electron emissive compounds such as BaCO 3 , SrCO 3 and CaCO 3 ; metals such as Cu, Au, Ag, Ni and Pt, and alloys; glasses, thermally crystallisable glasses, solder glasses and mixtures thereof. The material is preferably vitreous solder glass consisting essentially of 70-80wt% PbO, 16-8wt% ZnO, 10-7wt% B 2 O 3 , 1-4 wt% SiO 2 , 0-1wt% BaO and 0-1wt% SnO 2 . The coating composition may also contain a cyclic isoprenoid solvent such as turpentine, which should be volatile at the pyrolysis stage. In the examples glass is coated using poly- (alpha methyl styrene) in which is dispersed a PbO/B 2 O 3 /SiO 2 mixture or a mixture of vitreous particles and glass ceramic particles.
