Abstract

1311798 Spinning processes PAVENA AG 21 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 10831/70 Heading D1F A spinnable, longitudinally stable band of adhesively interconnected staple fibres is produced continuously or discontinuously by applying an excess of liquid in which an adhesive is distributed to a fibre band (produced by a preparatory machine, e.g. such as a carding engine) in endless or successive fixed lengths thereof, squeezing off the liquid surplus and compressing the fibres into the form of a compact sliver and elongating the sliver within the limits of elastic deformation while setting of the adhesive occurs as a result of liquid, e.g. a solvent, removal as by heating, radiation; ionisation or use of gases. The elongation results from tension which is maintained constant or variably increased or decreased. The sliver may be elongated before setting with its length maintained constant, e.g. by clamping, in which case the final elongation is subject to change according to tension generated by the developed shrinkage. In the continuous process shown in Fig. 9, a compressed sliver 2 emerging from an applicator I transfers, perhaps with an increase in speed, at A to a rotating drum 4 along the surface of which it travels under tension in a helical path and leaves at B as a stable band. The adhesive is set in a processing zone within a housing 5 and under tension conditions which may be determined according to whether the drum 4 is of uniform diameter or tapered in one sense or the other. In another method, Fig. 10 (not shown) compressed sliver treated with adhesive is guided directly through a processing zone and then wound into a package at a speed which subjects it to the required tension. The adhesive may be starch and its derivatives, carob seed derivative powder, cellulose derivatives, polyacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol.
