Abstract
1311247 Bathythermograph L'ELECTRONIQUE APPLIQUEE 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 25648/71 Heading G1N A system for measuring water temperature in a continuous range of depths, and which is launched from a tube 11 in a moving submarine 10, comprises a sensor probe 20 including a thermistor 22, which probe is of negative buoyancy but is releasably contained in a float assembly including a float 33 of positive buoyancy, so that after launching the assembly floats upward to a predetermined depth x at which a pressure-sensitive device 40, 41 releases the sensor probe from inside the float, whereupon the probe sinks vertically paying out from its interior a coiled cable 21 which passes through a watertight plug 37 in a wall 36 and connects the thermistor with a cable 38 coiled on the exterior of the float and thence via cable 23 to a temperature recorder in the submarine. Prior to separation of the probe from the float the interior of the assembly is evacuated through a valve 34. A cable cutter 28 is provided. In an alternative embodiment, Figs.8 and 9 (not shown), the float is not evacuated but merely contains sufficient air to give it positive buoyancy against the weight of the probe it contains. A calibrated spring (78) acts as the pressure-sensitive device for separating the probe from the float in this embodiment.
