Abstract

1311246 Acrylate ester copolymer compositions STAUFFER CHEMICAL Co 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 24971/71 Headings C3G and C3P Impact resistant thermoplastic polymers comprise a vinyl chloride polymer and a copolymer of (1) at least one C 1-12 alkyl acrylates and (2) benzyl acrylate or vinylidene chloride, optionally grafted with a methyl methacrylate polymer. The copolymer components may be so selected that the refractive index thereof is equal to that of the rigid polymer whereby clear compositions may be obtained. The copolymers may also contain other monomers, e.g. vinyl esters, esters of unsaturated acids, amides, nitriles, vinyl ethers and vinyl aromatic compounds; and cross-linking agents, e.g. glycol dimethacrylates, allyl acrylate, allyl methacrylate, divinyl benzene, divinyloxyethyl ether and diallyl adipate; and the methyl methacrylate may be graft copolymerized with ethyl acrylate. The rigid polymer may be a vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer with a minor proportion of at least one ethyl enically unsaturated comonomer, and the additive may be incorporated by coagulating or spray drying mixed latices, or by forming the rigid polymer by emulsion or suspension polymerization in a latex of the additive copolymer. Many examples are given describing the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride in the presence of latices of copolymers of butyl acrylate and vinylidene chloride with and without butylene glycol dimethacrylate and styrene, copolymers of 2- ethylhexyl acrylate, vinylidene chloride and butylene glycol dimethacrylate, and copolymers of butyl acrylate, benzyl acrylate and optionally butylene glycol dimethacrylate; and the blending of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer with butyl acrylate/vinylidene chlorride/butylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer, and of polyvinyl chloride with a graft copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate on a butyl acrylate/vinylidene chloride/butylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer.
