Abstract

1310720 Protecting inscribed material by lamination H PLUMMER-ALLINSON 7 Sept 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 49879/70 Heading B5N Matter inscribed on sheet material such as paper, cardboard or textile fibric is protected from damage or deterioration by a process comprising providing a hard, smooth working surface such as a glass or metal sheet, treating the surface with a release agent, applying to the treated surface a coat of transparent liquid synthetic resin that has been activated with a hardener, applying woven fibreglass fabric to the resin coating, wetting the fabric with activated resin, placing the inscribed sheet material face downwards on the wetted fabric, wetting the back of the sheet material with the activated resin, applying fibreglass matting (especially chop strand matting) to the wetted back, wetting the matting with the activated resin, allowing all the resin used to dry and harden and removing the composite product from the working surface. The resin may be polyester resin hardened with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and the release agent may be polyvinyl alcohol solution. The wetted matting and, prior to application of the inscribed sheet, the wetted fabric may be subjected to roller or squeegee action to remove air bubbles. The edges of the product may be trimmed or, alternatively, the working surface may have a marginal rim to prevent running of the resin.
