Abstract

[Also in Division B2] A polyamide sheet with a shaped surface or a grid structure is made by applying a printable paste of an ungelled polyamide in a watermiscible organic solvent to a surface which is recessed or apertured with the desired pattern, soaking the polyamide paste with water to precipitate the polyamide out from the paste and separating the sheet from the surface. The polyamide may contain a plasticizer and the paste a gel inhibitor and a silicone oil. The surface may be a rotating roller 1, with depressions 3 in its surface, the paste 4 being applied to the upper portion of the roller by a doctor blade 5 and the lower portion of the roller dipping into a bath 2 of water. A sheet material 6 may be applied to the roller 1 after application of the paste and before entering the water so that a sheet coated with polyamide is formed. The sheet may be a textile material to which the polyamide layer is firmly bonded or may be release coated, the polyamide layer subsequently being transferred to a textile material. The coated textile materials may be used as iron-on stiffening materials for fabrics.
