Abstract

1310398 Floating barriers J MULLER 22 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50147/70 Addition to 1228415 Heading E1H A floating barrier for containing oil spills and waste is formed from buoyant panels releasably articulated together by hinge pins 23 of hairpin shape which fit through sleeves 24, 25 and apertured flanges 26, 27 provided at the ends of the rounded panels, so that the ends of adjacent panels form a seal. Nylon reinforcement plies 30 which pass around the sleeves 24, 25 and extend along the length of the panels, are covered by a closed cell foam rubber or synthetic plastics buoyant padding 31 and a waterproof rubberised sheet or plastics foil or film coating 32. Alternatively (Fig. 6 not shown) the reinforcement may comprise nylon cables secured to loop members which enclose the sleeves. Ballast weights may be secured via cables or chains to the bottoms of the connecting means between adjacent panels.
