Abstract

1340742 Floating boom METROPOLITAN PETROLEUM PETROCHEMICALS CO INC 24 March 1971 7881/71 Heading E1H A floating boom for containing pollutants comprises a plurality of longitudinally spaced elongate floats 10 enclosed within a flexible' sheet 11 extending around, between and below the floats to define a skirt 12, the sheet having weights 27 adjacent its lower edge 22, and a longitudinally extending rigid region 21 immediately below the line of floats 10 to define a pivotal axis to prevent motion of the skirt being transmitted to the floats 10. The latter may be polyethylene bags 13 filled with foamed polystyrene beads 15, the sheet 11, preferably of woven nylon yarn covered in PVC, is heat-sealed to form the rigid region 21, and the weights 27 may be PVC bars. Further heat seals 24, 25 and 48 and 50 serve to confine the weights 27 and the floats 10 and heat seals 28 and (31-33) Fig. 7 (not shown) provide stiffening longitudinally of the skirt and transversely between adjacent floats respectively. A plurality of booms may be joined together and for this purpose each boom has at one end a flat bar (35, Fig. 9) and at the other a bifurcate clamp strip (36) the bar and strip having interlocking teeth (42, 43) and aligned apertures for bolts (44). The booms have eyelets 45, 46, 47 for towing lines.
