Abstract
1310135 Grinding edges of lenses O P RAPHAEL 19 July 1971 [22 July 1970] 35444/70 Heading B3D A method of fitting a lens 14 to the wire rim 45 of a spectacle frame comprises trying the lens in the rim, estimating the amount of adjustment required, placing the lens in an edge grinding machine provided with a pre-settable automatic stopping device, pre-setting the device to stop the edge grinding operation when the estimated amount of adjustment has been effected, starting the machine, removing the lens therefrom when the edge grinding operation has stopped, and placing the adjusted lens in the rim. The automatic stopping device is pre-set by estimating the amount of material, and hence the time required, to be removed from the lens by the distance 46 between the lugs 51, 52 of the frame when the lens is tried in the frame, the lens having previously been formed to shape and with the required bevel edge. The lens is then mounted between pads 16, 17 on shafts 18, 22 which are mounted in a frame 10 pivotable about a shaft 11 rotatably connected by universal couplings 25, 26 and slightly flexible shaft 27 to a worm drive 28 driven from a motor 29. Sprockets 30, 31 are connected by chains 38, 39 to sprockets 32, 33 on the shafts 18, 22 so that the lens is rotated at a slow speed, e.g. 4 r.p.m. The shaft 11 is supported by a yoke 12 from a post 13 so that the lens can move laterally as the edge engages a grinding wheel 40 which is belt driven and formed with a V-groove in its surface. The lens bears by gravity on the grinding wheel and rapid vertical movements are damped by a disc 49 carried by an arm 47 from the frame and located within a viscous liquid in a container 50. The frame is connected to a piston 52 in a cylinder 56, the lower end of which is connected by a valve 59 to a compressed air source 62 and exhaust 61. The valve is controlled by a solenoid 63 actuated by the pre-settable stopping device 60 in the form of a timer having a dial 64 which the operator sets to the time he estimates from the gap 46 between the lugs 51, 52 of the spectacle frame is required for grinding the lens until it is the correct size.
