Abstract

1445197 Edging contact lenses BAUSCH & LOMB Inc 2 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972 (2)] 36835/73 Headings B3D and B3X A method of contouring the edge 45 of a contact lens 47 while firmly supported in a lens mould 49 and constituting with the mould a lens and mould assembly, the edge 45 being adjacent a face of the mould, the contouring being effected by apparatus 11 having a rotating material removing surface 44, comprises placing the assembly in a position spaced from the surface 44, inducing relative movement along a prescribed path between the surface and assembly to effect engagement of the lens with the surface, automatically centering the lens on the surface to substantially simultaneously engage all portions of the edge with the surface, maintaining the engagement with a constant force for a preselected period to remove a portion of the edge, and automatically disengaging the edge from the surface. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the lens and mould assembly is placed on a support 29 mounted for universal movement and rotation by means of a ball 31 on the end of an arm pivoted to a pair of bearing blocks 23 on a base 13. A slot 26 intermediate the length of the arm receives a roller 27 which is supported by a pin 28 and is urged by a spring 25 into engagement with a cam 19 on the drive shaft 18 of a motor 17 carried by a support 15. A second support 35 carries a motor 37 the drive shaft 39 of which has a plastics material collar 41 holding a metal sphere 53 which has a finely textured surface 44 of approximately 30 RMS constituting the material removing surface. Rotation of the cam 19 moves the arm 21 from a position spaced from the surface 44 to permit a lens and mould assembly to be placed on the support 29 to a position in which the edge 45 of the lens engages the surface 44 with a force determined by the spring 25 and for a time determined by the shape of the cam so that the surface 44 contours the edge of the lens 47, the cam thus moving the lens away from the surface. The ball 31 permits the support 29 to pivot as the lens engages the surface so that substantially simultaneous engagement of all the edge of the lens occurs with the surface 44 and the rotation of the surface imparts rotation to the lens. In another embodiment, the surface is constituted by a layer 139 of tight woven silk cloth over a layer 138 of cotton cloth on a metal sphere 137. Glycerin may be applied during contouring, a splash guard 143 being provided.
