Abstract
1309806 Alkali and alkaline earth metal hydrides DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 12 June 1970 28689/70 Heading C1A Alkali and alkaline earth metal hydrides are prepared by reacting hydrogen under pressure with the molten metal in a pressure-tight reaction vessel and in the presence of an alkali metal hydride or alkaline earth metal hydride initially produced or introduced into the vessel, the contents of the vessel being agitated during reaction, and the liquid alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and hydrogen are added to the vessel during reaction in stoichiometric amounts and at the rate at which they react to form the alkali metal hydride or alkaline earth metal hydride so that the pressure remains constant during the reaction. The hydride initially produced or introduced into the vessel should fill at least 10%, preferably one-third, of the volume of the vessel. Examples 1 and 2 are directed to the preparation of sodium hydride employing 3 atmospheres pressure and normal pressure, respectively. The hydride obtained by the process is typically a crystalline product which ignites spontaneously in air.
