Abstract

1309671 Rotary positive displacement engines BELOIT COLLEGE 31 March 1970 [2 April 1969 24 Sept 1969] 15268/70 Heading F1F A rotary engine driven by steam or compressed gas comprises a rotor 150 mounted on a shaft 130 in a housing 120, arms 140 being pivotably mounted at one end in the housing and engaging the rotor to define working chambers. In the embodiment shown, two sets of working chambers L. P. and H. P. are defined between the arms and the rotor and the arms and the housing, respectively. Operation as a "simple" engine is obtained by supplying pressurized fluid to both chambers of each arm simultaneously through inlets 122 and 129, and a "compound" engine by supplying pressurized fluid to chambers H. P., and then connecting chambers H.P. to the succeeding chambers L.P., which are expanding as the H. P. chambers are contracting, to produce further expansion of the pressurized fluid. Valving may be provided for changing from "simple" to "compound" operation. The fluid is exhausted through ports 190 controlled by portions 145 of arms 140. Valves controlling sequential connection and cut-off of the pressurized fluid to the chamber inlets are controlled by cams (178) on shaft 130, Fig. 4, (not shown), the timing of connection and cut-off being adjustable, Figs, 14 and 15 (not shown). A counter-balancing flywheel and auxiliary devices are also mounted on shaft 130. Labyrinth sealing grooves 142, 152 are provided in the end walls of the rotor and arms adjacent the housing end walls. In Fig.1 (not shown), chambers H. P. are omitted. The single-lobed rotor shown may be replaced by a double-lobed rotor, Fig. 13 (not shown). Two engine units may be connected end-to-end with their housing angularly displaced by 45‹ and their rotors 90‹, the H. P. and L.P. chambers of the units being interconnected by values in a partition between the.housings, Figs. 9 to 12 (not shown). Valves controlling flow to and between the working chambers may be operated by the arms, Figs. 16 to 19 (not shown).
