Abstract
1309574 Leak detectors COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 7 Sept 1970 [19 Sept 1969] 42708/70 Heading G1S A device for detecting helium leaks through a wall comprises a detector 1 adjusted to helium, a pumping system for said detector, a vacuum circuit including said pumping system, absorbent means for selectively retaining gases and preferentially passing helium connected in said circuit upstream of said pumping system in close proximity to said detector, said means including a tube 2 containing activated charcoal and including means 3 for adjusting the temperature of the charcoal. The detector 1 is preferably a mass spectrograph, and the U-shaped tube 2 preferably contains granulated coconut charcoal. The means 3 is a Dewar flask containing liquid nitrogen at a temperature of 77‹K and the tube 2 is connected to the detector 1 by a spigot 6. A probe 4, described in detail Fig. 3 (not shown) is connected to the tube 2 by a rubber pipe 5. The vacuum circuit may be the pumping circuit of the spectrograph or an additional circuit connected to the spigot 6 in parallel with the spectrograph. In a modified arrangement Fig. 2 (not shown) two tubes 2 are connected in parallel to the detector through individual valves thus enabling one tube to be regenerated by removing the Dewar flask while the other tube is in operation.
