Abstract

1309304 Photo-lithography E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 30 Nov 1970 56809/70 Heading G2C Lithographic printing plates are prepared from a photo-sensitive element comprising in order (a) a support, (b) an unexposed, hydrophilic, water-permeable, organic colloid silver halide emulsion layer, and (c) a thin, transparent, olephilic, water-permeable coating, by (1) imagewise exposing, (2) developing (3) etch-bleaching, and (4) removing the etch-bleached (i.e. exposed) areas together with the overlying areas of layer (c), by rubbing, to leave an olephilic image on a complementary recessed hydrophilic background. Preferebly layer (c) comprises polyacrolein (e. g. in form of NaHSO 3 adduct), a polymeric dialdehyde, and/or an oleophilic Wesser type complex, optionally mixed with a binder (e.g. gelatine), a surfactant (e.g. Na dodecyl sulphate or cetyl betaine), formaldehyde and/or a mixture of 9-11C saturated monocarboxylic acids. The hydrophilic background may be provided by using a support having a hydrophilic surface or coated with a hydrophilic layer, or by not etching completely through the emulsion layer (by effecting only surface development or by incomplete etch-bleaching). The process is normally positiveworking. Negative-working plates can be prepared by either (i) using a direct-positive silver halide emulsion, or (ii) imagewise exposing, tan developing, bleaching, re-exposing, developing and etch-bleaching the last developed areas. The invention also relates to a photographic element for use in the above process.
