Abstract

1308785 Coils BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 23 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 45620/70 Heading H1P A former for a superconductive electromagnet wound with a filament of, e.g. niobium, zirconium, titanium or gallium alloy in a matrix of, e.g. copper comprises annular stainless steel end members 18 mounted in aluminium connecting tube 20; and circular recesses 22 in the end members oppose the ends of a stainless steel support tube 24, on which the superconducting coil is wound so that on cooling the member 20 contracts and the end members grip the coil without distortion of the support tube. The tube may be replaced by four equally spaced aluminium bars, and the bars or an external tube may connect the outer edges of the end members.
