Abstract

1,169,075. Electron lenses; superconductor coils. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. 31 March, 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 14735/67. Headings H1D and H1P. A superconductive magnetic quadrupole lens, preferably iron-free except possibly for soft iron end discs to reduce leakage, has prismatic, radial metal support members, e.g. of brass or aluminium alloy, for the coils 10, each support member having a cross-section in the form of two trapezia 3, 4 as shown. The angle between the faces 41, 42 of the outer trapezium is between 30 and 50 degrees, preferably 40 degrees and the inner face 30 may be flat or quadrant-shaped as shown. Each support member is provided with end pieces of plastics material and short rods 35 are added in sequence as the coil is wound. The whole system is assembled within a cylindrical shell made up of four elements. around which a steel cable is hooped. The coils 10 may comprise single strand insulated niobium-zirconium cable.
