Abstract

1308531 Laminates LITTON BUSINESS SYSTEMS Inc 20 Feb 1970 [24 March 1969] 8364/70 Heading B5N An integral layered assembly comprises at least two layers, one of the layers being a watersoluble pressure-sensitive adhesive for adhering the assembly to a substrate, e.g. an aluminium plate, and one of the layers also comprising a first reactant which, when the substrate to which the assembly is adhered is placed in water, is capable of reaction (a) with the water (b) with one or more second reactants present in the assembly and/or (c) due to the heat of the water to produce gas so that the assembly tends to be driven by the force of the released gas from the substrate to which it is adhered. The assembly which may be used to produce labels, tapes, bumper stickers or posters to adhere to a substrate may comprise paper, cloth or plastic film coated on one surface with a barrier layer or size to which is applied the pressure sensitive adhesive, the exposed surface of the pressure sensitive adhesive being protected by a release sheet e.g. of paper, coated on the surface adjacent the adhesive with a release coat, e.g. nitrocellulose, cellulose triacetate or a silicone. The barrier layer may be of bone or hide glue, fish glue, casein, gum tragacanth, gum dammar, gum karaya, agar agar, gum arabic, starch, dextrin, chlorinated starch, silicate of soda, polyvinyl alcohol, carboxy methyl cellulose or methyl or hydroxyethyl cellulose. The gas producing system may comprise a' two reactant system, one of the reactants being in the adhesive and the other reactant in the barrier layer of paper layer. The gas producing reactant may be, calcium oxide, cesium carbonate or tetroxide, N, N<SP>1</SP> dimethyl N, N<SP>1</SP> dinitroso terephthalamide, aluminium bromate, ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, or sodium ammonium phosphate, or in the case of a two reactant system an acid, e.g. formic, tartaric, citric, acetic, phosphoric, oxalic, titanic or sulphanic acid, with a metal salt, e.g. sodium bicarbonate, borate, perborate acid pyrophosphate, pyrophosphate peroxide, citrate or xylene or toluene sulphonates, lead carbonate, sodium aluminium phosphate or sodium lauryl sulphate. When removing the assembly from the substrate to which it is adhered, the second reactant may be included in the water.
