Abstract

1308489 Vinyl chloride copolymers LONZA Ltd 17 Dec 1970 [18 Dec 1969] 60045/70 Heading C3P A vinyl chloride copolymer dispersion for use in mortar mixes is obtained by forming a copolymer having a glass temperature of 15-25‹ C. by polymerizing a monomer mixture of 30 to 80% by weight of vinyl chloride and 20 to 70% by weight of polymerizable, internally plasticizing monomers in the presence of an aqueous phase which contains, referred to the total weight of the monomers, (a) 3 to 6% by weight of an emulsifier mixture which consists of 60 to 90% by weight of non-ionic emulsifiers and 10 to 40% by weight of anionic emulsifiers, (b) a polymerization catalyst, (c) 2 to 4% by weight of a water-soluble solvent for the polymer, (d) 0À3 to 0À5% by weight of a copolymerizable, water-soluble monomer, and (e) a buffer agent, and further adding to the dispersion so obtained 0À5 to 5% by weight, referred to the total dispersion, of an anionic emulsifier, and 0À1 to 0À5% of an antifoam agent. In examples the comonomers used are vinyl propionate/butyl acrylate, vinyl propionate/ ethylene, vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate, and vinyl acetate/dibutyl maleate together with a small amount of acrylic acid in each case. Hexylene glycol or glycol monobutyl ether is used as solvent together with a sulphate or sulphonate as anionic dispersant on alkylene oxide condensate as non-ionic dispersant and a silicone as antifoam agent. Monomers are added gradually with part of the non-ionic dispersant.
